But it's kind of exciting, too. We, those of us writing and editing and publishing now, are active participants in what comes next.

Kris, I applaud you for being willing to experiment, to leave your traditional-NYC-lens on the desk, and...well, be part of the experiment.

It's been almost 600 years since Gutenberg disrupted the spoken-story model and gave the printed word wings. We're at the nexus of another turning point. It's murky and vexing...but, damn, a bit exciting, too. That's why they're willing to read manuscripts on nights and weekends (when all the reading gets done) --because they love books! Without that love, the generally low pay and long hours just aren't worth it. Yes, it also helps to have some business or tech sense (social media experts, present yourselves!) but I still believe the business side alone isn't enough, since you can make more money selling just about anything else. Even the editors who sell commercial stuff usually have some special beloved projects on the side -- things they know won't necessarily break even or do particularly well, but worth it all the same. This is true for agents as well.Andromeda Romano-Laxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16988887975016816552noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5996753044552511588.post-4853701024732506092011-10-24T08:53:39.954-08:002011-10-24T08:53:39.954-08:00I think another addition is writing is an art and ...I think another addition is writing is an art and making a living is a business. Sure, I've made some income on grants here and there and a small advance for my first book, but although I want to publish, I'd rather earn my money in other ways. I like having a totally separate career, that doesn't take away from the art--or the fun--of writing. I know it's not this way for everyone, but for me, having another fulfilling job is critical to keeping the writer alive.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
